About Boxing Wraps
Why boxing wraps matter
Your hand has 27 small bones, most of them tiny and unprotected. Boxing wraps compress those bones into a single striking unit, support the wrist joint, lock the thumb away from danger and give the knuckles a layer of cushioning before the glove foam takes over. Skipping wraps is the single fastest way to develop chronic boxer's knuckle, sprained wrists and broken fifth metacarpals.
Cotton vs Mexican-style vs gel wraps
Traditional cotton boxing wraps give you the most control and the longest life. Mexican-style wraps add a small amount of stretch for compression, favoured by Latin-American fighters. Gel wraps slip on like inner gloves with built-in knuckle padding and are perfect for fast classes when you don't have time to wrap properly. Most fighters own both styles of boxing wraps.
How to wrap your hands
Loop the thumb, three turns around the wrist, three turns around the knuckles, X-pattern between each finger, back over the knuckles, finish at the wrist. Wraps should feel firm but never numb, if your fingers tingle within a minute, redo it. A well-wrapped hand should let you make a tight fist with no slipping.
Boxing Wraps, Frequently Asked Questions
What length boxing wraps should I buy?
180-inch (4.5m) boxing wraps suit most adults. Smaller hands or junior boxers can use 120-inch (3m) wraps. Long wraps give you more turns through the knuckles and around the wrist for better support.
How often should I wash my boxing wraps?
Every session. Boxing wraps soak up sweat fast and turn into a bacterial sponge if left in a gym bag. Use a mesh laundry bag and air-dry, never tumble-dry, the elastic in Mexican-style wraps will die.
Are gel wraps as good as traditional hand wraps?
For quick training sessions and beginners, gel boxing wraps are convenient and protective. For sparring, competition and serious bag work, traditional cotton or Mexican-style wraps still give better wrist support and a more locked-in fist.
Do I need wraps if I'm only doing cardio boxing?
Yes. Even light bag and pad work loads stress on the wrist and knuckles. Get a pair of cheap boxing wraps before you ever throw a punch on a heavy bag.
