About Boxing Bags
Choosing the right boxing bag
Hanging heavy bags between 4ft and 6ft suit most home gyms, longer bags let you train low body shots and uppercuts properly. Free-standing boxing bags are ideal if you can't drill into ceiling joists; look for a wide, water-fillable base for stability. Speed bags develop hand-eye coordination and shoulder endurance, while floor-to-ceiling balls sharpen timing and slipping defence.
Boxing bag weight and fill
A good rule for heavy boxing bags is half your bodyweight as a starting point. A 70kg fighter is best served by a 30-40kg bag; pros and heavyweights go 50kg and up. Avoid sand-only fill, it compacts at the bottom and feels like punching concrete. Quality boxing bags use shredded fabric, foam layers and a small amount of sand near the base for stability.
Mounting and floor space
Hanging heavy bags need a solid mounting point, a beam, a wall bracket rated for at least 150kg, or a ceiling mount with a heavy-duty swivel. Free-standing boxing bags need a flat 2m x 2m floor area and ideally a rubber mat to dampen vibration. Always wrap your hands and wear bag gloves when working any boxing bag.
Boxing Bags, Frequently Asked Questions
How heavy should my boxing bag be?
Around half your bodyweight is a solid starting point for a heavy boxing bag. Lighter bags swing too much; heavier bags feel dead. Most adult home gyms work well with a 30-50kg hanging boxing bag.
Are free-standing boxing bags as good as hanging bags?
For 90% of home users, yes. Modern free-standing boxing bags absorb hard combinations well and let you move around the bag freely. Serious heavyweight power-hitters may still prefer a hanging bag for the genuine swing.
What's the difference between a heavy bag and a speed bag?
Heavy boxing bags develop power, conditioning and combination work. Speed bags develop rhythm, hand speed and shoulder endurance. They train completely different attributes, most fighters use both.
Do you ship boxing bags Australia-wide?
Yes. We ship boxing bags direct across Australia. Larger heavy bags are sent via freight; smaller speed bags and free-standing units go via standard courier.
