About Boxing Protection
What boxing protection do you actually need
At minimum, every boxer needs a quality fitted mouthguard and a groin guard before sparring. Add open-face or full-face headgear once you start hard sparring, and shin guards if you cross-train kickboxing or Muay Thai. Boxing protection is one area where buying cheap costs you more, a $15 mouthguard does not protect teeth or jaw the way a properly moulded one does.
Headgear: open-face vs full-face
Open-face headgear maximises visibility and is the standard for amateur boxing competition. Full-face (cheek-bar) headgear adds protection for sparring days. Look for headgear with a snug forehead band, secure chin strap and dense foam over the temples and ears. Good boxing headgear should sit firm without restricting your peripheral vision.
Mouthguards and breath control
Boil-and-bite mouthguards are the entry point, softened in hot water, bitten down to take the shape of your top teeth. For competition or daily sparring, consider a custom-moulded mouthguard from your dentist. A good boxing mouthguard protects teeth, dampens jaw impact and lets you breathe through the nose without gasping.
Boxing Protection, Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need headgear for boxing sparring?
If you're sparring with contact, yes. Quality boxing headgear absorbs glancing impacts, protects against cuts and reduces the risk of cumulative trauma. It is not a magic shield though, controlled sparring with a trusted partner matters more than gear.
How do I know my mouthguard fits properly?
A correctly fitted boxing mouthguard stays in place when you talk and breathe with your mouth open. If it falls out or you have to clamp down to keep it in, refit it. Re-mould it every 6-12 months as your bite shifts.
Are shin guards necessary for boxing?
For pure boxing, no. If you cross-train Muay Thai, kickboxing or MMA, shin guards are essential boxing protection equivalent, they protect both you and your sparring partner during clinch and kicking work.
Is your boxing protection gear approved for competition?
Most of our boxing protection gear meets AIBA / Boxing Australia spec for amateur competition. Check the individual product page for sanctioning details before competition use.
