About Boxing Pads
Choosing the right boxing pads
Focus mitts are the bread and butter of boxing pads, light, curved, fast to move with. Thai pads are larger, longer and more padded, designed to absorb knees, kicks and full power crosses. Body shields strap around the torso to take body shots safely. If you only buy one pair of boxing pads, start with quality focus mitts; if you train MMA or Muay Thai too, add Thai pads.
Pad work technique and safety
Holding boxing pads is a skill. Keep your wrists locked, drive the mitts forward to meet each punch, and absorb at the elbow rather than the shoulder. Bad pad-holders cause more wrist and rotator cuff injuries than the bag ever will. If you're new to holding boxing pads, start light and short, 2-minute rounds, jab-cross-hook only, and build up.
Construction and durability
Quality boxing pads use multi-density foam (firm front, softer back) wrapped in genuine or premium engineered leather. Look for reinforced palm grips, ventilated palms and double-stitched seams. Cheap PU boxing pads peel inside 6 months under daily club use; well-made leather pads last 5+ years.
Boxing Pads, Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best boxing pads for beginners?
A pair of curved focus mitts is the best first set of boxing pads. They're light, easy to move with, and forgiving on the holder's wrists while you both learn proper pad technique.
What's the difference between focus mitts and Thai pads?
Focus mitts are lighter, curved and designed for boxing combinations and sharp punches. Thai pads are bigger, longer and absorb full-power kicks, knees and crosses. Most coaches own both styles of boxing pads.
Can I use focus mitts for Muay Thai kicks?
Not for repeated full-power kicks. Focus mitts aren't padded enough to absorb shins safely. Use Thai pads or kick shields for kicking work and keep focus mitts for boxing combinations.
How do I look after my boxing pads?
Wipe boxing pads down with a damp cloth after each session, never leave them in a sealed gym bag, and rotate two pairs if you're a full-time coach. Treat the leather every few months with a quality leather conditioner.
